Team-Building & Private Parties with the Ogden Curling Club

Many companies recognize the value of corporate team-building exercises. These exercises can achieve the following benefits:
  • Improve communication between employees and departments
  • Improve morale and trust
  • Increase productivity
  • Teach cooperation skills that transfer to many other activities
Ropes courses, obstacle courses and other, similar activities sometimes fail to achieve the intended benefit because many people have already participated in them elsewhere, or they are physically incapable of participating. A fresh, new experience that excites everyone is more likely to achieve positive results. So why not try a real Winter Olympic sport at the Olympic Venue?

Prices will depend on the number of participants, the type of meal selected (if any), and the time/day selected (most events range from $10-$35 per person). This entire program will typically take place at the Weber County Ice Sheet, home of the 2002 Winter Olympic Curling Tournament (4390 Harrison Blvd, Ogden UT 84403, on the campus of Weber State University). There is a conference room and meeting area suitable for presentations if you want to include a meeting, awards ceremony or other corporate activity in your program.

Curling originated on the frozen lakes and rivers of Scotland in the early 1500's. It has transformed into a highly competitive and exciting sport, yet it is quite easy to learn for people of all ages and abilities. Canada and Europe have enthusiastically embraced the sport, and here in the US it is quickly spreading beyond it's current base in the upper mid-West. The American teams are excited to be competing in Ogden for Olympic gold in 2002.

So what is curling exactly? Curling involves 2 teams of 4 players. Each game consists of 8-10 ends (similar to innings in baseball). Each player will slide two 42-lb stones toward a large bulls-eye target at the other end of the rink. The object is get your team's stones into the target and knock your opponent's stones out. Teammates sweep the ice to adjust its speed and direction. It takes some skill and practice but you will quickly get a feel for it. Curling has aspects of horseshoes, bowling, golf and chess all rolled into one, yet it can also provide vigorous exercise. There are no ice-skates involved, so anyone can enjoy it. Teamwork and communication are critical to achieve success in curling. Your friends and co-workers will quickly rise to the challenge and embrace the competitive but cooperative spirit of the game. We can provide an event which includes the following:
  • Curling clinic taught by our experienced team of instructors (you will learn the basic skills and teamwork required to play the game)
  • A mini-tournament to put your new-found skills to the test
  • A break for lunch can include a video presentation or Q & A session
  • Plan on spending 2 hours on the ice
